Yes it is also along Hume Highway from Yass to Gundagai - not sure how invasive they are away from the roadside, but are heavy seeders and hard to get rid of once established

Not Potentilla recta, which is indeed sometimes abundant along roadsides, but has palmate leaves. A milky secretion sounds more like a family such as Euphorbiaceae or Apocynaceae, rather than Rosaceae ( which is where Potentilla belongs ).

I'm not sure it is Potentilla recta. The leaves have only the one lobe from what I can see (or can the sulprur cinquefoil also have just single lobed-leaves? The fruits are 3-lobed, the leaves are a bit hairy, and the now drying reddish stems are quite stiff and almost woody, if that helps . I'll see if I can add a couple more photos and I'm not saying you aren't right, as my knowledge is limited!
