Castiarina hilaris is smaller (about 7 mm long), with different texture on the upper surface giving it a kind of sparkling appearance. Castiarina scalaris is generally larger (about 10-11 mm, although occasionally smaller), with a shiny upper surface. In addition, the distribution of green markings on the elytra differs between the two species.
