User's notes

A striking small tree or large bush (sometimes it seems to have multiple ‘trunks’ as in photo 5). This plant has shiny glabrous leaves with virtually parallel veins (photos 3 & 5). New leaves in early spring are almost a yellow-green (photo 2) and change colour to a reddish orange (some leaves at the very top of photo 2 have started this change). Flowering from late Jan with bunches of tiny white 5 petalled flowers with an almost tubular base is followed by small berries (photo 1). The bark is very corky-looking (photo 4). But I’ve noticed this tree being referred to as ‘axe breaker’, so whilst that may refer to the wood alone, the bark itself does feel (to the touch) more solid than it looks.
