This young snake was the victim of a predatory attack, with both the predator & the snake being killed. I suspect it is a Brown snake but understand that colouration and markings can be quite varied.
Two very similar looking species are found in this area, one harmless (Freshwater Snake (Tropidonophis mairii) and one highly venomous species, the Rough-scaled Snake (Tropidechis carinatus). This one is the latter, as it doesn't appear to have a loreal scale, which although out of focus on the side-on head shot, can just be made out to be absent.
