User's notes
Locally referred to as ‘meat ants’ these share a couple of features with some bull ants and jumping jacks. They are moderately aggressive, (though the pain of their sting isn’t as intense or enduring as many others), and they have, what looks like, 5 segments to the entire body (photo 1; also refer sightings 4664486 & 4664492 for more about this observation re segments). Differences include the head being only slightly ‘chisel’ shape at the front, with the corners are rounded and the eyes set further back to in the upper head (photo 2). The head and the abdomen are black as are the lower legs, and the rest is dark red, or a dark plum colour, depending on the light (photos 2 & 4). Most of the body is covered in short hairs, especially the rear half of the abdomen, the legs and parts of the head (photos 2, 3 & 4) They are renown for moving and piling pebbles above the nest, in this case there are no pebbles close by and they appear to have rolled the soil into balls as if to substitute (photos 3, 4 & 5).
